Type: Supernatural, Shounen
Year: 2008
Studio: Brain’s Base
Overall Rating: 3.56
Recommendation: Just for Entertainment/ Must Watch

Natsume inherited both his grandmother’s ability to see spirits and her “Book of Friends” Yuujin-chou, a list of spirits she had defeated during her lifetime. Spirits who had their names written in the book were bound to serving Natsume Reiko, thus they were understandably eager to get their names back. Since, his grandmother is no longer around, Natsume has to take on the harassing Spirits – and the task of returning their rightful names.

I don’t think anyone would ever label Yuujin-chou as a “Must See”. There is an absence of intrigue or conflict – the series is as gentle and unassuming as its protagonist. But sensitive treatment of loneliness and friendship allows it to strike that elusive cord in the hearts of viewers. Recommended for people who like heartwarming stories.

Ratings Breakdown:
Visual: 3.5
Music: 3.5

Passable but nothing spectacular. Pastel colours reminds me of Hachikuro. Both opening and ending songs are restful and inviting. They are a good indicator of what to expect from the series.

Setting: 3.0
Plot: 3.8

Yuujinchou is stronger on plot and character development than animation. Nonetheless, it lacks an overarching plot and most episodes are stand alones. Only a concern for Natsume keeps viewers coming back for more. In this respect, it is similar to xxxHolic Kei. Although Yuujinchou is about the supernatural, its certainly not out for a scare. Most of the Spirits are gentle or misunderstood creatues at the end of the day.

Natsume and the “Book of Friends” which sets the story going.

Characters: 4.0
The series does a good job of crafting the story of Natsume – right from episode one, narrating his backstory, dropping hints of past trials and tribulations, establishing his loneliness, isolation and gentleness, allowing viewers to empathise the main character. Anybody who has ever felt the pain of “being different” at any point in time, would be able to identify with Natsume.
Natsume is essentially a strong person despite his fragile appearence. He’s gentle and polite, but reserved and emotionally distant. I’m looking forward to a 2nd season just for the sake of seeing Natsume make some friends (Tanuma) and find a direction in life.

Nyanko-sensei’s transformation reminds me of Kerebos of CCS, but thankfully less “cute” and saccharine. Nyanko’s neko form sports a cunning look which endears me to him. I believe Inoue Kazuhiko voices both of Nyanko’s forms which is quite a feat.
