Holidays begin again and Animepress restarted!…with a post about a movie. Maybe I should lose the title instead 0_0. Thanks for all the comments so far, Please continue adding in your own opinions!!!! I’ve decided to kick start with Two Faces of my Girlfriend, cuz it attracted me from the moment I saw its trailer.
TFGF is more comedy than romance with less artifice. Possibly, a result of better comedic than romantic chemistry between Bong Tae-Gyu as Guchang and Jeong Ryu-Won as Anni. Anni and Guchang are sweet and innocent as a couple, but no sparks fly between Hanni/Yuri and Guchang who appear better as drink buddies.
Jung Ryu Won (My Name is Kim Sam Soon) is the highlight of the film although Bong Tae Gyu definitely holds his own as the average guy with a streak of resilence and a healthy dose of common sense. Jung proves her worth as a talented and versatile actress, transiting between the 3 different personalities convincingly. She portrays the sweet, artless Anni and chain-smoking tough-talking male Hanni with equal aplomb; yet turns into another character, as heart-broken Yuri finally emerges. It was amazing (at least to me) how different each of them appears.
Nothing much can be said for the storyline, which is as cliche as they come, but presenting the story from Anni/Guchang’s incomplete and unsuspecting PoV gives it a twist. The downside is that story development seems trite and unrealistic after the relevation. Portrayal of MPD (or DID) and its multiple fainting episodes is realistic enough (to a layman like me), with minor inconsistencies such as Hanni refering to Yuri as “I”. I didn’t like ending though because fusing the MPD doesn’t appear to be as easy that portrayed and the romantic ‘happily forever after’ didn’t personally appeal to me (to be expected though).
Overall, its a light-weight comedy with a few touching moments, nothing that weighs heavily on your soul/ emotions. Something like Anni’s disarming smile.
