I was first attracted to D. Gray Man’s art and dark atmosphere. There were some things I liked very much about the first mission and I was hoping that it would ride out some of its childishness and mature into a great series. However, it regressed in later episodes. D.gray man is thus a frustrating combination of great story elements lurking within the trappings of a typical shounen action series.

I wish it wasn’t that case, but to-date, the best thing about the series is the animation and music, which is undeniably good. All said and done, I do like the nifty uniforms and character designs very much.
Setting: 2.5
The idea for plot and setting is very attractive but the execution is not very well done. The setting appears to bear little relevance to the storyline. The series displays NO sense of history. I couldn’t help thinking that it might sit better in a modern or futuristic setting without being constrained by pre-conceived notions of the 19th century.
19th Century? Try 2090 and it won’t make a difference.
Plot: 2.8
The plot relies on various Biblical elements, but their utilization is too shallow to truly add depth to the series. How is the Black Order and Earl connected to God? Why were people chosen to be innocence-compatible? They don’t seem particularly religious or combat-worthy. Resurrecting the dead to be akumas and not allowing the exorcists to stray from the Order in life and death are good plot devices, but not enough to make up for its overall weakness.
Characters: 3.5
Most of them – Allen, Kanda, Lenalee, Lavi are interesting characters with a dark past. They could be better and more interesting if the writer allows them to break out of stereotypical moulds. I’ll wait and see.
The Earl reminds me of the villian Joker in Batman series. I can’t take him seriously.
